Panama Viejo


The original city of Panama was established in 1519 by the Spanish and was the first city founded by the Spanish on the Pacific Coast. The city was attacked and destroyed in 1671 by an English pirate named Henry Morgan. The ruins of the city are now referred to as Panama Viejo (Old Panama) and are along the eastern fringes of the current Panama City.

The Nuestra Seņora de la Asuncion Cathedral was built between 1519 and 1626 and the bell tower has been restored in recent years.
